The Publishing Department of the South African Medical Association is home to the biggest health and medical titles on the continent – including the South African Medical Journal and the South African Medicines Formulary – this rapidly growing department delivers top-quality, opinion-changing publications to over 25 000 medical professionals every month.
Position
Do misplaced commas drive you crazy? We are looking for someone like you to join our experienced and passionate copyediting team. As a Technical and Journalistic copyeditor, you will have: an enthusiasm for exacting prose; an excellent command of the English language; a keen eye for grammatical errors; and the ability to engage critically with specialist health and medical text.

Specific responsibilities of a technical and journalistic copyeditor include:

• Timeous, accurate and thorough copyediting of both technical and journalistic content, adhering to house style
• Fact-checking of names, statements, calculations, data, etc.
• Liaison with authors of academic papers to ensure correction of errors
• Liaison with design personnel and Production Manager to finalise layout, artwork and publication schedule
• Self-management of work-flow for each manuscript

Requirements

• BA (Hons) degree or BSc (Hons) or higher degree, with publishing experience
• A high level of computer literacy, specifically in MS Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro
• Demonstrable ability to rewrite clumsy or laborious copy without losing the writer’s voice
• A good eye for layout and design
• Experience multi-tasking and performing under pressure to meet deadlines
• Advantageous:
o Competence in Adobe InDesign a significant advantage
o Editing/copyediting training

Experience
• A minimum of 2 years’ experience in editing medical and/or scientific content
• Experience with magazine/journalistic content advantageous

The successful applicant will work remotely but with support from a highly experienced and dedicated team in our offices in Pinelands, Cape Town. The appointee will be expected to sign a service-level agreement.
